Liposuction

You eat a blanced diet and are loyal to an exercise regimen, yet you still have stubborn pockets of fat.  The truth is that slimming down can be difficult for many people.  This is because excess fat tends to accumulate in certain areas and stay there, despite a healthy lifestyle.  If you are looking for an effective way to achieve the toned results that you desire, liposuction might be a great option for you.

Liposuction is a popular body contouring procedure that removes excess fat from the areas that you want to improve.  Dr. James Fowler and Dr. Wesley Culpepper are board-certified plastic surgeons who have been performing cosmetic surgery for over twenty years.

Liposuction is a a safe and effective procedure that has been performed for decades. Many men and women find that they are able to achieve the long-lasting body contouring results that have evaded them with liposuction.  The procedure is very versatile and can be tailored to address the specific areas that are concerning to you.

Liposuction can remove excess fat from many areas:

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

While liposuction can successfully remove fat deposits, it should not be confused with weight-loss surgery. Good candidates for liposuction are within their ideal weight range and are otherwise healthy.  Dr. Fowler and Dr. Culpepper have extensive experience performing liposuction, and they will consult with you to determine your candidacy for the procedure and to establish expectations for outcome.

Liposuction compared to Abdominoplasty

People seeking to improve the appearance of their abdomen often ask the difference between liposuction and abdominoplasty.  Liposuction is more appropriate for those patients seeking to slim down specific areas of the abdomen.  The abdominal wall is composed of muscle, fat and skin.  Liposuction addresses the fat layer only.  Using small incisions, small surgical instruments are used to remove the fat from beneath the skin, making that layer thinner.  Surgery is usually shorter and recovery is quicker.  Abdominoplasty is a surgical technique that removes skin and fat of the upper and lower abdomen while tightening the muscle of the abdomen.  This surgery is more complex and recovery is longer.  Everyone has different needs with abdominal wall rejuvenation. Dr. Fowler and Dr. Culpepper can help you identify your specific areas for treatment and establish your unique surgical plan.

What to expect from the procedure and recovery

Dr. Fowler and Dr. Culpepper use tumescent power assisted liposuction to remove stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise.  The PALS system offers a number of advantages over other liposuction methods, including:

In addition to being performed as an individual procedure, liposuction may also be used in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery procedures such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast augmentation, or breast lift.

Liposuction recovery varies by individual and depends on a number of factors including your general health and the extent of your liposuction treatment (the number of areas treated).  Most patients are able to return to work and light daily activities within a week.  Any lingering bruising and swelling typically dissipate within a few weeks, and you will likely need to wear a compression garment during the initial weeks of your recovery.

Liposuction results

At some point during your teens and early twenties, the number of fat cells in your body became a fixed number.  That is why it is nearly impossible to eliminate fat cells through diet and exercise.  The cells shrink with weight loss, but they are not eliminated.

Liposuction is effective because the procedure actually removes fat cells, giving you long-lasting results. However, the remaining cells can enlarge with weight gain if you do not maintain a balanced diet with exercise.  Healthy lifestyle choices will help ensure you maintain the results of your liposuction procedure.
